How we use your data

The microchip implanted in your pet has a unique number. If the pet is lost, the only way the unique number can be of any use to trace the pet's keeper/owner is to have a registry where the number is matched to contact details. We provide a database that contains a registry for this purpose. The registry matches chip numbers to the keepers of the pets.

We provide a means for you to update the information that has been registered. It is your responsibility to remember and protect your access credentials so that unauthorised access or changes are avoided. It is also your responsibility to ensure that the registered information is updated when necessary so that it can fulfil the purpose of assisting in your pet's return if lost.

By submitting your data to us you are consenting to allow the data to be used for reunification purposes. Details such as your pet's species, breed and appearance are primarily used as corroborating information when identifying a lost pet. A search by an authorised person will be on the basis of the chip number, with a comparison against available corroborating information, and the contact information then being revealed when a match is identified.

Authorised persons include vets and certain veterinary practitioners, pound officials, certain animal welfare organisations, dog wardens and police officers, agents and administrators of the service.

Except with the owner's consent or as provided under law, pet and contact information registered with us is not revealed to third parties, including the general public.

We have partnerships with other businesses, and if there is good reason to suggest that you share some information with these, we will say so very clearly and ask for your consent. We will not share any registered information with sponsors and/or partners without your clear approval. By default, we will assume that you have not given approval for any such sharing of information, even if it is to your benefit.

When a chip is registered, the fact that there exists a registration for the chip is an important fact in its future success. To this end, we share the status of chips implanted in cats and dogs with certain partners such as EuroPetNet. This does not include your name or contact details or the breed or appearance of your pet. The information shared in this manner is only for the purpose of confirming that the chip has been implanted and that it is registered with us. The information is available to the public via EuroPetNet and also directly from our site. Other service providers like us can determine if we have information relating to any given chip, but the information we have recorded will not be divulged except as part of a reunification activity.

When you access our service you are asked to supply an email address. The email address is primarily to provide an access recovery mechanism and for contacting you regarding your pet's registration or reunification. Your email address is part of your contact details and will be protected appropriately.

If you leave the jurisdiction, you may change the registered details to provide forwarding contact information. Other jurisdictions may have alternative legal obligations regarding registrations, and it is common for pets to be re-registered in their new countries. As we are part of EuroPetNet, it may be an advantage to retain the registration with us but we expect you to keep the information up to date.

As a general rule, an account untouched for several years that refers to a pet whose age is far beyond life expectancy may be assumed to be an expired account. At our discretion, such accounts may be deactivated and eventually removed.

If there is a change in the status of your pet (i.e. is lost, stolen or has died) then please log in to update the status. In the case of dogs, the law obliges you to keep the registered information up to date.
